Respite care, is any care arrangement designed to give rest or relief to unpaid carers. The aims is to support carers to have a break from their caring responsibilities. Caring for an ageing parent or a family member can be very physically and mentally challenging. The role requires a lot of commitment. No matter how committed you are to the needs of the person you’re caring for, it is critical for you to take good care of yourself. If you are the main carer of the person you are looking after, an occasional break from your caring responsibilities is a must. It may be needed so you can look after your own health and wellbeing, and also to take a break from caring.

Our Respite care service is designed to replace the care that you would normally be giving your loved one, as well as ensuring the person receives the help and support they need whilst you take a short break from the roles.

For instance, you can use our respite care service to take a holiday or a break, or time off if you are ill. You might take a break for a week, one morning a week, or just occasionally.

Respite care services include:

  • Day-sitting services, where someone comes into your home during the day to care for the person you look after. This gives the carer a break during the day, with the carer using the time to do something they want to do (e.g. go to the shops, visit friends or pursue education or a hobby)
  • Spend time with the person and engage them in social activities both inside and outside of the home.
  • Stay with the person or make regular visits over a certain period of time so that the carer can go on holiday or have an extended break away from the home.
  • Night-sitting services, where someone comes to your home to care for the person you look after, letting you get a good night’s sleep.
